Light-Weight and Ever So Strong

Sunglasses, Sangria, Sand & Sea

Summer has arrived, so now ladies is the time to turn up the heat and glam factor a notch or several, with a new pair of sunglasses. Personally if I had enough chutzpah, I would live in them! For now though, I will avail myself of every possible opportunity to add a little style and panache to my summer wear. Sunglasses, large straw hat and of course bright red lipstick (it has to be red), and I am all set for the day. Hmm, might even hit the beach later with my latest copy of Vanity Fair mag !

No dark circles to worry about, and I know my mirror is lying, crows feet (note to self, soft lighting from now on ) all safely hidden by sunspecs. No daily battle with hair that droops at the merest hint of humidity, hat solves that little dilemma. Then the icing on the cake, not to be eaten of course, I’m watching my weight, time to indulge in one of my all time favorite hobbies, admiring the view! Now much as sunlight dancing across the waves is undoubtedy picturesque, for me, it is the allure of sun oil shining on a gloriously toned 6 pack!

Drum roll please,as you see where the sungalsses come in handy. Not only do they in my case, hide a multitude of sins, but with the darkened lenses, it is impossible for anyone to see who or what I am feasting my eyes on.

Scene set; sunglasses on; straw hat hiding my hair, which now I come to think of it, bears a striking resemblance to said hat; sangria in one hand; magazine in the other; I can drool away to my hearts content. ( note to self, must not fall asleep this time, drooling fine, dribbling not, oh the embarrassment)

Well moving on briskly, with today’s large bold designs, taking us back to the golden era of Jackie O,we can all up our glam factor and become stlye icons.

Just consider it, retail therapy that is good for our health ! We can look amazing, while knowing we are protecting our eyes from the very damaging effects of U.V. radiation. Now tell me that isn’t appealing.

If by any remote chance someone has the temerity to question your teeny weeny spending spree, just disdainfully raise one eyebrow,( you know the look ) and put them firmly in place, by pointing out that it is considerably cheaper than cataract surgery and or a face lift. ! After all no squinting in the sun’s dazzling glare, equals fewer crows feet !

By the way, the life guard at the red hut on Siesta is mine, he just does not know it yet !

So back in the real world, why not enter our drawing to get a free pair of Lulu Guness signature sunglasses. Then go ahead and enjoy the views !

Or pop into our Opticians, say hello, have a browse . If something catches your eye we will give you a $50 discount !

Sunglasses – Your Sunspecs

Cocoons_eyeartWe all love living in sunny Florida and most of us are now aware of the damaging as well as beneficial effects of sunshine. No doubt most of us feel our mood lift as we open the drapes to reveal, cloudless blue skies and glorious sunshine.

We know to protect our skin from both the aging effects of the sun but also the increased risk of skin cancer. We have seen it in the media and are generally well educated on these aspects of sun damage. How many of us are aware of the eye problems associated with over exposure to the sun’s ultra violet or invisible rays ? Sure we all know it is more comfortable to put on sunspecs to reduce brightness and glare, there is however far more to sunglasses than first meets the eye. (every pun intended)

The correct sun lenses will help to protect our eyes from the formation of cataracts and macula degeneration of the retina later on in life. Both of these conditions will reduce vision and as yet there is very little that can be done about the latter.

We need to consider two aspects of the sun’s rays here. The darkness of the lens we choose will cut out visible radiation, however it is the invisible or ultra violet radiation which causes the problems. Now this is where it becomes interesting, a very dark lens which many people choose, thinking the darker the better, can do more harm than good. Why ? you may ask.

The answer is quite simple, the darker the lens, the more difficult it becomes for us to see, so the pupil, dilates or enlarges to try and let in more light and make vision easier. The light which is let in through the enlarged pupil is both the harmless visible light but also the harmfull invisible or ultra violet radiation.

We think we are being prudent and protecting our eyes when in fact the reverse is true. The solution to this seemingly impossible conundrum is in fact very simple. Always ensure that your sunglasss lenses block both UVA and UVB radiation.

The UVA radiation in particular is a major culprit in eye damage, as it can pass through the cornea(clear outer layer of the eye) then through the lens and finally reach the retina. It is this penetration of UVA radiation that can lead to both cataracts and macula degeneration, later in life.

All the sunglass lenses we prescribe at EyeArt protect against both UVA and UVB rays.

Don’t take risks with your eyes, vision is probably the sense that most of us would most hate to lose.

Vision and Driving

Many of us drive on a daily basis and probably under many different conditions of visibility, from brilliant sunshine to night time driving. Our vision is of paramount importance to how comfortable and confident we feel with what in effect is a very complex task.

When we first get our driving licence, one  thing that is tested is our vision and for obvious reasons. The test is carried out under fairly false conditions which do not take into account all the situations we may encounter when we finally hit the open road. It is the intention of this article to outline some common problems with vision and driving and how some of them can be reduced and in some cases eliminated with the correct choice of spectacle lenses.

When considering the health of the eye, one problem that unfortunately many people encounter is the onset of cataracts. This development will cause some reduction in vision and when driving at night can also cause glare and light scatter of both headlights and street lights. This is however not a problem confined only to those with cataracts, we can all suffer from glare and dazzle at night. It is often referred to as the star burst effect as that is exactly how it can appear. It is not only uncomfortable, but can be very confusing, in fact even hazardous as we see a whole series of glaring headlights approaching, the dazzle created can even cause us to momentarily lose our sight altogether, even if only for a split second. That split second can however be enough to cause an accident.

One very effective way of reducing this problem is to have spectacle lenses made with an Anti Reflection coating. This helps in two ways, firstly by reducing glare, the coating will reduce considerably the amount of light scatter, this in turn will actually enable the driver to have clearer vision. This is helpful to all those who drive at night whether cataracts are present or not. The reduction in glare causes a reduction in eye strain and tired eyes, the increased visual clarity which ensues, helps all drivers, but is even more important if vision is reduced by the onset of cataracts. So ask your Optician about anti reflective coatings and consider this option when you make your next spectacle purchase. I know many of you reading this may have encountered problems with anti refection coatings in the past , with  the new coatings available this really is a problem now of the past. Remember, there really is no such thing as being able to see too clearly when driving, in fact I sometimes  wish I had eyes in the back of my head when I take to the highways. We all need to consider not only our own safety but that of the passengers we may also be transporting.

The next aspect of vision and driving I would like to tackle is the exact opposite, that of driving in brilliant sunshine. This is a situation which those of us fortunate enough to call Florida home, will be well acquainted with. The first thing many of us consider is a tinted lens for driving, and that will indeed help, but there are other solutions which are more effective. The tint will reduce brightness which can cause us to squint, but it does not fully tackle the problem of glare and heat haze on the roads.

One very effective solution is to consider a Polarising lens. This will reduce brightness but will also substantially reduce glare.Again there are a couple of advantages to this type of lens, the reduction in glare will increase vision and also reduce eye strain and tired eyes. The other advantage is the 100% protection from damaging UVA and UVB light. Polarising lenses are not just to improve visual clarity although it is beyond question that they do, use them to eliminate tired eyes, which can make driving so uncomfortable.Use them also to reduce reflections off the car dashboard and windshield. So why not make what is already a difficult task, a much easier, more comfortable and above all, safer one.

A couple of very simple and easily overlooked pointers , one ensure both your headlights and windshield are clean, it seems obvious but how many of us remember to check ?

Why not pay us a visit while we are offering a 20% discount on all, driving and sun lenses. We would be happy to discuss individual needs and ensure you have a pair of lenses not only custom made for you specifically, but for a price that will make you smile.
